Mackey “Mac” O’Donnell is a veteran of the real estate industry with over thirty years of extensive experience throughout the private and public sectors.

In his role as Senior Vice President at the California Division of Land Advisors, Mac is a part of the Special Projects Team representing investors, developers and builders seeking to acquire or sell residential land throughout California.

Known by most in the land development/homebuilding arena for his role as co-founder and president of land brokerage firm O’Donnell/Atkins, Mac has a lengthy resume that proves his remarkable leadership and innovative ability to find the most valuable land opportunities. At the firm’s peak in 2005, O’Donnell/Atkins had grown to six offices and forty brokers statewide, with $1.6 billion in annual land transactions.

Mac’s extensive experience in the private and public sector provides a deep and unique background for providing clients a 360 degree perspective of land planning and development issues. Prior to founding O’Donnell/Atkins, Mac served as Director of Land Development for The Warmington Company, where he led the acquisition and build-out of a number of projects, including a 4,000 acre/13,000-unit master planned community, which involved the installation of over $50 million of backbone infrastructure, and land sales of over $100 million to merchant builders.

Mac also has keen insight into the dynamics of public planning agencies and politics.  He served as both a municipal planning director (cities of San Fernando and Banning) and a private planning consultant (Urban Futures).  Mac has applied his expertise in this area, time and again, to help identify ideal development opportunities.  As a private sector planning consultant, Mac became highly skilled in the design and entitlement of real estate projects—optimizing their value in light of every kind of physical, environmental, political and economic constraint.

An Orange County native, Mac holds a Master of City Planning degree (MCP) from the University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Social Ecology from the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.  He has also served as an instructor in the Light Construction and Development Management program at the University of California, Irvine.  Mac is a licensed California Broker, member of the Urban Land Institute and Building Industry Association.
